Four Nigerian soldiers and two civilians were killed and two South Korean employees kidnapped by gunmen who ambushed them in southern Nigeria, the police announced on Wednesday.

Gunmen ambushed a convoy of vehicles in southern Nigeria, resulting in the tragic deaths of four Nigerian soldiers and two civilians. The incident took place in Rivers State on Tuesday morning. Kidnappings for ransom are unfortunately a common occurrence in Nigeria, with criminal groups often targeting foreigners, especially those working in remote areas such as mines and construction sites.

According to a senior state police official, the assailants specifically targeted two South Korean employees who were traveling in the convoy. The four soldiers who were escorting the Koreans and their two civilian drivers were killed in the attack. The gunmen also kidnapped the two Koreans and fled the scene, taking the soldiers' weapons with them.

Rivers State Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe Koko, confirmed the attack and stated that the matter is currently under investigation. The Nigerian army and the Daewoo company, for whom the kidnapped employees were working, were not immediately available for comment.

Nigeria, being Africa's most populous country, is home to several Asian companies, particularly Chinese and South Korean, who are involved in various infrastructure projects such as road and rail construction. Unfortunately, incidents of foreign workers being kidnapped in Nigeria have occurred in the past, often resulting in their release after paying a ransom to the captors.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of implementing enhanced security measures to safeguard the lives of foreign workers in Nigeria. It is a tragic event that highlights the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals working in remote and potentially dangerous environments.
