Shakira Honored With A Statue In Her Birth City In Colombia
Shakira, the Colombian superstar, has been honored in her birth city of Barranquilla with the unveiling of a 6.5-meter (21.3-foot) statue in her honor.
The bronze and aluminium statue captures Shakira in her iconic hip-swaying dance move, with hands clasped over her head and one hip out. The inscription at the base of the sculpture reads, "Hips that do not lie, a unique talent, a voice that moves masses."
The unveiling ceremony, attended by Shakira's parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll, took place on the banks of the Magdalena River.
On social media, Shakira expressed her gratitude to sculptor Yino Marquez and his art student collaborators, praising their artistic talent. With hits like 'Whenever, Wherever', 'Hips Don't Lie', and 'Waka Waka', Shakira has sold approximately 80 million albums worldwide and has won three Grammy awards. In 2023, she was one of the most searched names on Google, according to the company's released figures.
