Oscar Pistorius, the South African athlete who was convicted of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has been released from prison on parole after serving nearly nine years of his 13-year and five-month sentence. The South African Department of Corrections confirmed his release, stating that he is now a parolee and is at home. Pistorius will be living under strict parole conditions until December 2029.
Some of the parole conditions for Pistorius include restrictions on leaving his home, a ban on consuming alcohol, mandatory attendance in anger management and violence against women programs, and community service. He will also have regular meetings with parole officials and will be subjected to unannounced visits by authorities. Pistorius is not allowed to leave the designated district without permission and is prohibited from speaking to the media until the end of his sentence. If he breaches any of these conditions, he could be sent back to jail.
It's important to note that Pistorius' release on parole does not mean that he has served his full sentence, as emphasized by the Department of Corrections. The parole system in South Africa allows serious offenders to be eligible for parole after serving at least half of their sentence.
